926 20th Ave.
We
lived most of our
growing up years at 926 20th Ave having moved there when I was about 5, Dolores
(who is still much
older than me) was 7, Buzz was about 9 and Carol was about 12.
Helen, Pat, Maggie and Kathy were to come later.
I remember growing up in this big old house (I
think it was already 75 years old when we moved in). Sadly,
it's not there anymore. As kids
we played mostly in front (usually in the street). In the
summer we played board games and read comics or listened to the
radio on the front porch.
The Central district of Seattle was and still is (in my mind) the
best area of all Seattle. As kids we walked to Lake Washington
to swim. We walked downtown to shop or see a movie in the BIG
theaters, like the Paramount, Liberty, and Fifth Avenue.
Buz at an early age.
This
is an early picture of Buz, I'm guessing he was about 4 when this
picture was taken. At the time I didn't know him having not
yet been born. But I'm sure he was a nice kid even back then.
The first four. (as apposed to the Final
four).
This
is a picture of the first four Horan kids. With that cute
little Mickey right there in front. I can't tell you how cute
he is, just double click on the picture and see for yourself.
Next is Dolores, don't let the fact that she has her arm around me
fool you. She is just waiting for the chance to push me out
the window (oh, that's another story). Buz is next.
Notice how his hair is combed. I think it's just like
dad's. Buz probably thought it would help him move to the top
of the list in dad's Will. I was always off the list.
Then comes Carol, she was the oldest and of course she needs to
direct things as she draped her arm over Buz and with her other arm
it looks like she is ready to conduct the band.
Buz first grade picture.
This
is Buz in the first grade (my guess). Can you find him?
(hint: look down lower left.)
The family is growing.
This
picture was taken at the Koerner's house. I remember that big
rock shaped like an egg in the lower left hand corner. Helen
and Pat are quite young. They are so cute. Hey Pat,
what happened?
Buz growing into the teen years.
This
picture and the next look to be taken when Buz was around the same
age maybe 15-17 years old. If someone know I'll be happy to
update these pictures, just let me know in the contact page.
The teen years.
Looks
like he has a crew cut in this picture. A little later on
there is a picture of Buz (my favorite) where you can see his crew
cut. He looked very good with that style of hair.
Looks like Madrona beach to me.
I'm
not sure but this picture looks like it was taken at Madrona beach
on Lake Washington. It's Dolores (age 16) and Buz (age 18) and
I don't know who the girl is. The ages are just my guesses.
Buz in High School.
This
a High School picture but again I'm not sure of the age. It
looks to be around his junior year.
Buz visiting Carol in the Hospital.
This
a picture of Buz while visiting Carol in the Hospital when she had
TB. Both Carol and mom had TB and back in those days they said
bed rest was the way to treat it. I remember we (the younger
kids) could not go into the Hospital we had to stay out side and
look through the windows which were about 10 feet up the side of the
building. I always thought that was an awful experience as a
kid.
Buz with is Plymouth.
This
is Buz with his Plymouth. It was a neat car. I think Buz
was around 19 here. He sure looked good in sweaters. He
loved his cashmere sweaters and I can remember how mad I made him
when I wore one and got a spot on it. then to make it worse I
tried to wash it which only made it worse. Oh, did I mention
that I failed to ask Buz if I could wear the sweater. Well I
was sure he would say yes so I just didn't ask. Boy was I
wrong.
My all time favorite picture of Buz.
This
is the picture I was talking about earlier. It is my all time
favorite picture of Buz. He was so good looking and to a
younger brother that lookup to him as some kind of hero
he was all of that to me. I think this is his senior
picture.
Marcia around the age of 18.
This
is a picture of Marcia around the age of 18. What a match they
made she was (and still is) so beautiful. They would later get
married and celebrated some 40 plus anniversaries together.
Buz coming home from Korea.
This
is a picture of Buz coming home from his tour of duty in the army (Korea).
This picture show's the second half of the Horan kids. Kathy
on the lower right and Maggie next to her. Cookie Flynn (neighbor
kid from across the street) then Pat (and he is still cute
here). That is Helen next to Pat. Carol on the far
left. In the background is Buz and Marcia. What a great
picture. If I'm right about this Buz spent 2 years in Korea
and this is when he came back home. I'm not sure where I am or
where Dolores, mom and dad are. One of us is taking the
picture I think.
The Flynn girls Peggy and Cookie.
This
picture was taken in front of the Flynn's house. From left to
right is Peggy Flynn, Buz and Dolores. The front row is Pat,
Helen and Cookie. I remember years ago when I was about 15 or
16 Mr. Flynn saw me smoking (I had just learned to smoke). I
was worried that he would tell mom and dad as they played cards very
often. I need not have worried because he never said a
word. He was a great man and Irish too. I don't know the
occasion for this picture.
A Christmas picture.
This
is one of the very few picture of all eight Horan kids. A year
or so ago we had this picture reconstituted (is that the right
word?). And we all now have a copy of this picture. It
was taken at Christmas time. This picture shows the idea of
two families with Carol, Buz, Dolores and I the first half and
Helen, Pat, Maggie and Kathy the second half. The one nice
thing about time is the second half it seems has now caught up with
the first half. Buz looks to be about 17 here.
Thanksgiving sometime in the fifties.
This
a picture taken at Thanksgiving (it could be Christmas). Buz
looks about 18 I look about 15. That is Bud Beach top
left. I'm not sure if Carol and Bud were married at this time
or just dating. I don't know what it is about the Horan's but
we didn't seem to take a lot of pictures. Dad made a cameo appearance
in this picture.
The groom's men at Buz and Marcia wedding.
From
left is Bud Beach, not sure, Buz, me, and Jim Prichard.
Buz and mom.
Mom
and Buz at the wedding.
Buz and Marcia in love and now married.
They
had a beautiful wedding and the reception was held at the Sorrento
Hotel in Seattle.
The families.
Marcia's
father and mother, Marcia, Buz and mom.
The Boys.
This
was taken a long time ago in a land far far away. Buz always
stayed slim and trim. I grew up as a skinny runt, so what
happened? Pat won't see his weight in this picture ever again
nor will I. I don't know the date of this picture but I'd
guess mid 70's.
A Spring time at Helen's.
Helen
is the Great organizer/cook of the clan. This picture was
taken in the spring of 2000 when Pat was out from Illinois.
All the kids were together again. Pat your still cute after
all these years.
At my son's wedding Jan 22, 2000.
At
last I have a real date for one of these pictures. This was
taken at my son's wedding on 1/22/2000. This is a really good
picture of Buz. He looks healthy in this picture. Also
in the picture from left is Dolores, Marcia and Carol.
Buz this summer, the 4th of July 2001.
This
is a picture of Buz this past July (2001) at Helen's.
We all took the Dinner Train last spring.
Pat
came out again from Illinois (man does he ever work?). He must
get frequent flyer miles as much as he travels out here. I'll
leave it up to you, my dear Web visitor to figure who all is in the
picture. Buz is in the left back row just under the number 8.
This is the last picture of Buz (09/16/2001).
This
is the last picture taken of Buz. I visited him and Marcia out
at Longbranch (their new home) on Sunday the 16th of
September. He seemed to be almost looking forward to the
operations coming up the next day. I think he felt that he
would get back to how he felt a few years ago. We had a good
visit and I am so thankful that I did go out there that Sunday.
